What at your grandma's house?

Happy snowy Monday!  Even though this was a short week, gosh did it seem long!  (The kids agreed, too!)  We saw two big snow storms which made many kids stay home (lucky them!) but the kids who were here still had a great week!  And speaking of snow, HOLY COW.  So many kids gone today as well.  Lucky them...I sure would love to be on my couch watching a movie right now.  Anywho, back to last week:

On Tuesday the kids thought about the goals they have for themselves and their future.  These goals could be academic, behavioral, far future goals, anything!  They then had to think about words that would get them to their goal like confidence, organization, and focus. After some brainstorming and working in pairs, each kiddo came up with a Word Goal for this semester.  It was great to see so many kids take time and put effort into choosing their word and coming up with action steps to achieve it.  We'll review these goals throughout the semester. We also chose 3 Word Goals for each class!

On Wednesday I taught the Apple Pie lesson.  I started class with this in the white board; "What's the Question Wednesday!  The answer is Apple Pie.  What's the question??" The first response of the kids was "What the heck?" then as they saw other kids writing questions, they got the point.  The best ones were "What's your social media account name?" and "What's at your grandma's house?"  Haha. I then taught the kids how we can compare relationships to 'pie eating'.  We drew circles and took notes to represent a Whole Pie Eater (leader and controller), Crumb Pie Eater (victim, less confidence) and Balanced Pie Eater (little of both!).  The kids really seemed to understand it and enjoyed looking at relationships this way.  They also took a quiz to see what Pie Eater they were in different situations then analyzed a few of their relationships from the view of pie eaters.  It was a great lesson and the kids really seemed to understand the concept.

Thursday was a GREAT start to our new tutoring expectations!  The mentors learned what 'tutor' meant and took it to heart.  The kids worked so hard!

Friday we played Scattegories as mentor/mentee pairs and their answers were hilarious!  We sure laughed a lot!  Looking forward to another great week and hopefully less snow!!  Oh and it's Super Bowl Sunday!  Woohoo!!
