This week was all about building our community back up and welcoming many new faces to each class! A lot of mentor/mentee pairs are changing this semester too but so far good relationships are forming and some kids already know who they want to be paired with!
On Monday new expectations and introductions were made while a roll of toilet paper was passed around. The kids chose between 1-10 pieces but had no idea why. We then got into a circle and made introductions then the kids had to say one thing about themselves or their holiday break with each piece of toilet paper. Some kids lucked out with 1 while others really had to think with 10. It was a fun way to start the year.
Tuesday we played a fun game of Telestrations, it's like telephone only on paper! Kids started by writing a sentence of their choice then handing it to the next person to draw a picture of their sentence. After this the first sentence is hidden and only the drawing it shown and the next person has to write a sentence to match. The pattern continues until the original sentence makes its way back to the writer. The results were HILARIOUS!
Wednesday we played Common Ground where groups of kids found as many commonalities between each other as possible. Some groups came up with over 100 things?! It was a great way for them to see how many similarities they have even if they think they are completely different than everyone else.
Thursday our room became a mess as we shoved the desks aside and played two games in circles (thanks Alex!!). Ball toss was to help learn names then Hot Hands was to see who remembered those names! The kids absolutely loved Hot Hands and laughed the entire time!
Fun Friday REALLY lived up to its name this week (thanks again, Alex!)! We played Hot Lava in the gym; when I first told the kids who to play you should have seen the eye rolls and the looks of "You have got to be kidding me..." especially from the girls, but as soon as they started playing the laughter was unstoppable. What a great game that I'm sure they'll beg to play again!
Looking forward to getting back into a routine this week and forming new mentor/mentee pairs soon!
