Mentor Monday was spent sharing out homework (Who in your mentee's family are they closest to and why?) and successes. Then the mentors played a game using only the letters of the class mentees' names to spell as many words as possible. The winners won chips or fruit snacks! They work so hard for food. Haha.
Wednesday was all about personal and professional stereotypes. For personal stereotypes, in groups the kids looked at photos of common personas like 'teenagers, jocks, and nerds' then wrote typical stereotypes for each. Each group rotated and was given the chance to add more ideas to each persona and afterwards we shared out as a class. For professional stereotypes, the kids created tree maps to show their learning. Thursday was for racial stereotypes. The kids saw a list of racial stereotypes then guessed which racial group to was stereotyped for each. After their first thoughts, I used google slides to reveal the true race that is typically stereotyped for each idea then media ads that personify the stereotype. The kids were spot on with asian stereotypes and had lots of thoughts on hispanic ones since a lot of my students are of hispanic culture. Things hit home and there was good discussions in the classes about these stereotypes. All the work from Thursday will lead into racism next week.
Friday was quiet fun with playing games or coloring together and one class got to play 4 square before the gym class took over! This week we'll celebrate Halloween and Dia de los Muertos so it should be a fun week!
